DGL 60 Capsules
Deglycyrrhized licorice root (DGL) has traditionally been used to support gastroin- testinal related complaints. The deglycyrrhized form of licorice differs from those often used for adrenal and other health concerns, allowing for higher doses which help heal the G.I. lining. Along with DGL, this tablet also contains aloe, slippery elm bark, and marshmallow root, all traditional demulcents to help soothe the gastrointestinal tract.
- DGL has been historically used to treat gastro and duodenal ulcers.
DGL accelerates the secretion rate of mucus by the gastric mucosa. Glycyrrhetic acid helps maintain high levels of prosta-
glandin in the stomach by blocking the activity of two enzymes involved in the metabolism of prostaglandins E and F2-alpha.
Elevated prostaglandin levels in the stomach protect the gastric mucosa.
Studies show DGL in chewable doses of 760 mg a day for one month, was superior to placebo in reducing peptic ulcer size
DGL must be chewed, so when it reaches the stomach it can break up and disperse, to attain gastric ulcer healing. Gelatin
capsules do not allow DGL to break up and disperse in the stomach. 2
In a study including 874 patients comparing the effects of DGL and cimetidine on chronic duodenal ulcers, it was found that
the healing rates between the two groups had no significant differences, and fewer relapses had occurred in the DGL group.3
In a clinical trial, 100 patients with benign gastric ulcerations were treated with either cimetidine (200 mg three times a day
and 400 mg at night) or DGL (760 mg three times daily between meals). Ulcer healing was assessed after six weeks. There
were no significant difference between the two regimes.2
Marshmallow root is a traditional demulcent herb with a long history of use for stomach ailments and cough. Demulcent herbs contain mucilage polysaccharides, which swell when mixed with liquid, and provide a slippery soothing property to mucos membranes.4
The German Commission E has approved the use of marshmallow root for mild inflammation of the gastric mucosa. The non- official British Herbal Compendium 1st edition also indicates marshmallow root for soothing the stomach and intestinal tract.4
Aloe Vera Concentrate:
• Aloe vera, like marshmallow root and slippery elm bark, is a demulcent that has been used throughout history. Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory, wound healing, and demulcent properties.
• Studies show aloe vera is beneficial at healing peptic ulcers in humans, thought to be due in part by its ability to neutralize excess stomach acidity and promote healing.5,6,7
• A study examining the effects of aloe vera on gastric acid secretion and gastric mucosal lesions in rats, found aloe vera inhib- ited gastric acid secretion and at low doses protected against mucosal injury induced by HCl.8
• The aloe vera concentrate used in this formula does not contain any anthroquinone glycosides commonly found in laxative formulas, and therefore does not have any laxative effects.
Slippery Elm Bark:
• Slippery elm bark is a traditional demulcent that has been used for centuries. Slippery elm bark is rich in mucilage which soothes the gastrointestinal tract and provides anti-inflammatory benefits.
